Dowds completed the full £14million MEP package on the prestigious Grand Central Station, Belfast project. This £340 million project was our first ever transportation project, and will be the largest integrated transport hub in Ireland which will include 26 new bus terminals, 8 new railway platforms as well as food and retail outlets to enhance the traveller experience.
A brief scope of our services included but were not limited to complete new LV distribution and switchgear, full security package including external car park systems, new roof mounted PV installation and new Air Handling Unit and Air Conditioning installation.
Our team integrated new DDA wayfinding technology – the building is provided with a GPS app to facilitate access for blind, deafblind, and partially sighted visitors to be able to navigate safely and reliably through the building. The system provided for the Grand Central Station is NaviLens, this app is free and very user friendly.
With regards to customers we implement Customer Information Screens with provision and installation of various display devices to customers providing on screen timetables of train and bus schedules.
The scale of the new multi-modal Transport Hub provided numerous technical challenges for the design and installation of the MEP services, particularly around the rail platforms and the large concourse spaces. We worked inline with the NI Railway Standards to ensure all works on platforms were completed safely and with the necessary Safety Critical Protection and controls in place as per the Northern Ireland Railway (NIR) Rulebook.
Due to the scale of the project our building services team and supply chain grew to a total of circa 300 operatives and over 100 suppliers. Co-ordination of our services was carried out by Farrans-Sacyr’s design team, with input from our site management and supervision team. We held regular meetings at the start and throughout the project to ensure collaboration with all the other services.
Site logistics were a major challenge due to the location of the site being in the city centre of Belfast, we worked closely with Farrans-Sacyr who operated a robust booking system to agree local drop off points for materials and always ensure controlled flow of site traffic.
We also exceeded our contribution to the ambitious social values targets, contributing over 1300 social value points on the project, including over 140 hours of environmental initiatives, all delivering a positive and lasting impact. Our initiatives included:
