Critical Care Complex, Ulster Hospital

Dowds delivered the complex M&E infrastructure for the new Critical Care Complex at Ulster Hospital. This 15,470sqm facility features Europe’s largest Central Sterile Supply Department and provides state-of-the-art surgical and diagnostic environments.

Delivered under the HEIG Performance Related Partnering framework, this 5-storey acute facility replaces and upgrades critical site infrastructure. The scope included seven fully laser-equipped theatre suites, a self-contained Endoscopy unit, 16 critical care beds, and a 4,000sqm laboratory floor. Dowds played a pivotal role during the 24-month pre-construction phase, leading design development and Value Engineering workshops. The team managed high-risk connections to existing site infrastructure – including LV, CCTV, and generator supplies – while ensuring the surrounding acute hospital remained fully operational.
