Dowds Group completed the full £14million MEP package on the prestigious Grand Central Station, Belfast project. This £340 million project was our first ever transportation project, and will be the largest integrated transport hub in Ireland which will include 26 new bus terminals, 8 new railway platforms as well as food and retail outlets to enhance the traveller experience.
Key Complexities and Challenges Accomplished
The scale of the building provided numerous technical challenges for the design and installation of the M&E services, particularly around the rail platforms and the large concourse spaces. We worked inline with the NI Railway Standards to ensure all works on platforms were completed safely.
Brief scope of MEP services:
-Complete new LV distribution and switchgear
-Full security package - including external car park systems
-Customer Information Screens - provision and installation of various display devices to customers providing on screen timetables of train and bus schedules
-Integration of new DDA wayfinding technology - the building is provided with a GPS app, NaviLens, to facilitate access for blind, deafblind, and partially sighted visitors to be able to navigate safely and reliably through the building.
-New Air Handling Unit and Air Conditioning installation
-New roof mounted PV installation
We also exceeded our contribution to the ambitious social values targets, contributing over 1300 social value points on the project, including over 140 hours of environmental initiatives, all delivering a positive and lasting impact.
We were honoured to play a key role in delivering Grand Central to regenerate this area of the city, attract more people to use public transport and act as an important gateway to Belfast as a modern, confident and progressive city and stimulate further economic opportunities for Belfast and Northern Ireland.
